AI Veganism: The Next Frontier in Conscious Technology Consumption

Recently at one of our “AI Leadership in Action” webinars, an attendee introduced me to a concept I’d never encountered in my work on AI ethics: “AI veganism.” The term, highlighted in a recent Guardian piece by Arwa Mahdawi, describes people who consciously abstain from AI tools for environmental, ethical, and personal wellness reasons.

As someone who has spent considerable time exploring the ethical dimensions of AI deployment, I find this development both intriguing and inevitable. Just as we’ve seen conscious consumption movements emerge around food, fashion, and other industries, it was perhaps only a matter of time before similar principles were applied to our digital consumption.

The Parallels Run Deep

The comparison to traditional veganism is more apt than it initially appears. Both movements stem from a growing awareness of hidden costs – whether that’s animal welfare and environmental impact in food production, or energy consumption and labour exploitation in AI development. The Guardian article notes that generating a single AI image might consume as much energy as 10 Google searches and require substantial water for cooling data centres.

This aligns perfectly with the ethical framework we’ve been developing around AI implementation. In our recent work, we’ve emphasized five key ethical principles: beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, justice, and explicability. AI veganism essentially represents individuals taking these principles into their own hands, making personal choices about where and how they engage with AI technology.

More Than Environmental Concerns

What strikes me most about this movement is its holistic approach. AI vegans aren’t just concerned about carbon footprints – they’re questioning the impact on human cognition, creative labour, and authentic skill development. The Guardian piece mentions concerns about handwriting disappearing and potential negative impacts on critical thinking abilities from over-reliance on AI tools.

This echoes what we’ve observed in organizational settings: the risk of implementing AI without proper alignment between technology and human potential. When we position AI as the “Always Available Assistant” rather than the “All Mighty” replacement, we’re essentially applying AI vegan principles at scale – using technology to augment rather than replace human capabilities.

The Implementation Gap Revisited

The emergence of AI veganism also highlights what we’ve termed the “implementation gap” – the disconnect between boardroom enthusiasm for AI (44% of S&P 500 companies mention AI) and meaningful, ethical usage (only 10% implement effectively). While executives rush to embrace AI transformation, individuals are making more nuanced choices about their personal technology consumption.

This suggests organizations need to better consider the human element in their AI strategies. If your employees are becoming AI vegans in their personal lives due to ethical concerns, what does that mean for enterprise AI adoption? How do you build trust and alignment when there’s growing skepticism about AI’s broader impact?

A Spectrum, Not Binary Choice

Like traditional veganism, AI veganism likely exists on a spectrum. Some practitioners might avoid AI entirely, while others might be more selective – perhaps using AI for data analysis but avoiding creative applications that exploit artists’ work without compensation. This nuanced approach mirrors the ethical decision-making frameworks we advocate for in organizational AI deployment.

The key is intentionality. Whether at the individual or organizational level, the question isn’t necessarily “Should we use AI?” but rather “How do we use AI in ways that align with our values and serve our genuine purposes?”

What This Means for Leaders

For leaders navigating AI transformation, the AI vegan movement offers valuable insights:

Transparency matters more than ever. If individuals are making conscious choices to avoid AI, organisations need to be explicit about how and why they’re implementing these technologies.

The ethical dimension can’t be an afterthought. As we’ve emphasised in our frameworks, ethics must be embedded from the beginning, not retrofitted after implementation.

Human agency must be preserved. The most sustainable AI implementations will be those that enhance rather than replace human judgment and creativity.

Environmental impact requires consideration. The hidden environmental costs of AI need to factor into business cases and implementation decisions.

The Future of Conscious Technology

Whether AI veganism becomes a widespread movement remains to be seen. But its emergence signals a broader shift toward more conscious technology consumption. Just as we’ve learned to question the true cost of fast fashion or processed food, we’re beginning to question the true cost of our digital consumption.

For organisations, this represents both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge is that stakeholders are becoming more sophisticated about AI’s limitations and impacts. The opportunity is to lead with transparency, ethics, and genuine value creation rather than simply following the latest technology trends.

The bottom line remains what we’ve always emphasized: successful AI transformation happens when technology and people work together with shared purpose and mutual trust. AI veganism, at its core, is about ensuring that purpose truly serves human flourishing rather than simply technological advancement.

As we continue developing ethical frameworks for AI deployment, movements like AI veganism remind us that the most important question isn’t what AI can do, but what AI should do – and whether we’re brave enough to say no when the answer isn’t clear.
